Charlotte was born in an asteroid settlement. It wasn’t a great place to be unless you were into mining, which she really wasn’t. At the first opportunity, she got off that rock. She managed a reasonable education, with a minor scholarship, but there weren’t enough opportunities upon graduation to get a job in her field of electronics.
She used those skills instead to short-circuit some locks and found she could make a good amount of money by liberating goods from people who didn’t really deserve them. One of the first people she deemed unworthy of their possessions was a known thief on the space station, so in addition to some credits, she also picked up the plans for a heist he was planning. It was a good primer. She pulled the heist instead, and became a better thief, too.
Flush with that victory, she became involved in the criminal underworld of the station, which resulted in her going planetside to a world involved in an insurrection and where there was a lot of demand for smuggled guns and goods. It was there that she met Vincent, an army man trapped behind his enemy’s lines. In exchange for his battle suit, which she could sell for a pretty penny, she got him off world.
She headed out not long after that, not caring for her life-expectancy on that world, and found a new space station that prided itself on its casinos. She settled into a comfortable position in the center of a gambling ring, and that was when her friend and right hand woman, Sheryl, BETRAYED her and sent her running from the station just ahead of the authorities while the faithless traitor took over Charlotte’s gambling ring.
She got away from the station authorities, but not the Imperium authorities. She was tracked down and arrested by Ethel Thomas, a law enforcement Agent who got Charlotte pinned with multiple counts of a variety of crimes she had created over the last decade or so.
However, instead of sending her to jail, Ethel recruited her into the Agents to catch other thieves. Charlotte started with Sheryl. Putting her rival behind bars was a very satisfying experience and not just because Sheryl was the one who brought Charlotte’s own criminal empire to a premature end. It was actually very satisfying to do something good for a change. Charlotte continued on as an agent in good standing, getting promoted from mere CI to actual agent with the recommendation and help of Ethel.
Of course, Ethel didn’t know that Charlotte had picked up a rakish pirate called Lester as a boyfriend around this time. But that wasn’t really Ethel’s business.
Assigned to her own cases now, Charlotte got some extra training with more law-abiding and law-enforcing skills, but her career came to an abrupt end when she was severely injured on duty. She was released from the agents on medical leave, and it took some time before she got out of the hospital, and when she did, she had a new job offer, having been referred by her niece Vivian, to work security on an colonization expedition…
